second Opera - Introduction
The Magic Flute [Mozart]
Libretto: Emanuel Schikaneder
premiere: 30 September 1791 Vienna, Freihaustheater
The most famous and meistgespielteste opera in music history is undoubtedly Mozart's Magic Flute.
entwined, on any other opera so many legends and interpretations of secret messages.
And it is also very close to make assumptions and to see Masonic ideas in the works. Other places to see the libretto of The Magic Flute as a plate and a little inspired audiences amusement.
Certainly everything is correct, how can it be wrong.
Europe was embarking on a new era. The elucidation of the intellectual elite culminating in the French Revolution. Everywhere
had been formed at that time lodges and clubs to discuss new ideas and to talk through education, philosophy and a new human understanding. The intellectual elite tried from the constraints of the crusty old society free.
The opera was at that time still meeting of the Company. And just here, there was the upheaval and the destruction of the old days.
The previously valid forms of opera have been ridiculed by the younger generation and provided as a reactionary symbol of the ruling class in question.
In the new operas were no ancient heroes and gods as personifications of the currently reigning Prince anymore, but just ordinary citizens.
And such works of the 1780s from the years were more frequently seen on the stage, finally ousted the Opera Seria for the ideal of Metastasio in the public theaters.
Metastasio, the Viennese court poet had at the beginning of the 18th Century, a new opera model developed, which quickly became binding. He suggested the drama as a framework, while the French preferred the tragedy. The drama had 3 acts, the tragedy of 5 and usually had the drama a happy ending.
There is a constant changing of aria and recitative was prescribed. A recitative is a
with basso continuo (harpsichord, cello, etc.) accompanied dramatic recitative, (derived from the Latin "recitare" - "present" from) the end of the 16th Century Italy was formed. By the recitative was in the Opera Seria pushed the narrative forward, the arias are musical illustrations, the action resulting from the emotions and tensions.
The whole was interspersed with duets, accompagnato recitative (orchestra accompanied recitatives).
The number of arias, each role was based on their importance, but soon the illustration of feelings came back in favor of pure vocal acrobatics.
The opera was opened by a Sinfonia and was contrary to the French overture structured exactly opposite: Allegro - Adagio - Presto - so instead of a grave, slow introduction and a quick joint and the repetition of the first part, was started here with a fast rate, continues at a slower rate and with a more rapid rate finished - there is a certain similarity with the Italian Concerto. This
Operasinfonias were so popular that they were soon performed without opera and composed - and finally ushered development of the classical symphony.
There were no real choruses in the opera seria, the final chorus was composed exclusively of the participating singers (which ultimately was probably an economic consideration).
In During the 18th Century it was common practice during the two periods of the opera, that is between 1 and 2 Act and the 2 and 3 perform act small, cheerful opera, Opera buffa. eg
Or depending on the house or venue at the court, it was also common perform ballet, these interludes could extend the performance period on a good 5 hours.
queen was in the opera, the ballet is always part of the plot.
But this rigid form of opera had survived quickly and as early as the 1760s there were many attempts by queen influences, so ballet and choral groups to integrate into the plot to break the rigid mold structure.
Especially in Italy was considered a long time in this rigid form of opera Opera Seria fixed.
too slowly woke up a national self-awareness: Italian written long operas in Italian, the Frenchman wrote operas in French, in England, English sung - in Sweden, Swedish, and in Russia, increasingly, Russian - only in Germany, the German language was in Opera rejected.
But this was not always so, the flower of the Hamburg Opera with composer Keiser, kiss, Schürmann and Conradi was not the first intermezzo in German.
in the early 17th Century there were efforts by Schütz and JPKrieger a German opera. The 17th
and 18 century, however, was mostly dominated by Italian opera and the opera in German was no more than a marginal phenomenon.
until the second half of the 18th Century came more and more German opera on stage. One of the first German opera in the new style was "Günther von Schwarzburg" by Ignaz Holzbauer. The libretto is extremely nationally and would not be the lively music of the Mannheim School to hear, we would date the work in a very different era.
Mozart had attended the opera in Mannheim, was thrilled by the music and disgusted by the text. Nevertheless, the opera reached a certain popularity, that in many cities was performed.
Some years later the first German in Weimar Singspiel "Alceste" premiered by Anton Schweitzer.
This work is now more attracted to such operas themselves.
A musical comedy has its model in the queen Opera Comique, basically a play with arias and ensemble numbers. Recitative is not here anymore.
is why the genre closely, but probably unconsciously, related to the English "Masque of the 17th Century, which was similar.
The most famous musical plays or Opera Comique in the second half of the 18th Century, the "Pilgrim of Mecca" by Gluck, "Zémir et Azor" and "La Caravane de Caire" by Gretry and finally "The Abduction from the Seraglio" by Mozart.
Mozart had in Vienna have had little success with his operas. While in Prague adored his operas, he met with "Le nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni and Cosi fan tutte" with little enthusiasm. He earns his money mainly as a virtuoso on the piano and to compose dance music for the Viennese court.
Posthumous portrait of Mozart by Barbara Kraft (1819) Finally, he worked with the man of the theater Emanuel Schikaneder, the theater was open for the common people. There was Opernpersiflagen and singing games with many funny scenes and a slightly to-understand story and of course all in German.
